The Lovers
Adam and Eve, naked and unashamed, are the very picture of innocence in paradise before paradise was lost.
Protected by the Angel of the LORD in the brightness of unfallen glory, they stand between the two trees: the tree of life with the fruit of perfect fellowship with God and the tree of forbidden knowledge to be gained as the fruit of disobedience.
The woman is clearly more spiritual as she gazes upon the angel while the man observes the beauty and glory of the woman, bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh.
They are co-creators, co-heirs, tending the fruitful garden and given the mission of being fruitful themselves, of multiplying and filling the earth.
They are the picture of the ideal marriage covenant and of the New Covenant between Christ and his bride the Church.
The represent fellowship and harmony and love.
They symbolize the purity of a new beginning.
They also stand at a crossroads as an example for us, that we might make a better decision and choose life.
