The Tower
The crowning achievement--the glory of fame and the glitter of gold--whether of a person or of a civilization, sometimes aspires to reach heaven itself. But pride comes before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction.
In this somewhat terrifying picture, the lightning from the heavens seems to have dislodged the crown of glory amidst smoke and fire. People fall in darkness attended by glimmering flames that take the shape of the initials from the very name of God--as if to promise new hope even as false foundations are shaken.
And whatever can be shaken will be shaken.
As with the Tower of Babel, the unity and aspirations that led to this glorious tower were not built upon the solid foundation and the high purposes of truth and love.
Sometimes destruction brings us to our senses and leads us to a better plan, stops our building on the sand. Like darkness before the dawn, the fall of Babel in Genesis 11 comes just before the call of Abraham in Genesis 12 with the promise of salvation for all nations.
Unless the LORD builds the house, the workers labor in vain.
